Admissions

Milton Road Primary School is an inclusive community primary school with pupils aged between four and eleven years old. We welcome children from within the catchment area and beyond subject to the availability of spaces.

We are a two form-entry primary school which means that we have two classes in each year group with 30 children in each class, 60 in each year group and a total number of 420 pupils.

As a local authority community school, admissions to Milton Road Primary are handled directly by Cambridgeshire County Council. Any queries from parents should be addressed to the local authority:

We know that selecting a school is one or the most important decisions a parent/carer can make. For that reason, we offer a number of tours for Reception class (EYFS) September starts throughout November and December of the proceeding year. 

 

Admissions for September 2026 start in our Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)

• National Offer Day: Thursday 16th April 2026

Next steps/expectations:

• Respond to the Offer: Log into the council portal to accept or decline the offer by the given deadline.
• Waitlist and Appeals: If not satisfied, you can join waiting lists for your preferred school(s) and initiate an independent appeals process.
• School Communication: To those who accept the offer we will send a "welcome pack" (usually via email) with forms, induction dates, and term dates, often in May or June.
• Transition Activities: We will be hosting a welcome evening for parents (in June) and stay-and-play sessions for children in June or July.

 

Admissions for September 2027 start in our Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS)

• Deadline to apply for a place: 15 January 2027
• National Offer Day: 16 April 2027 (or the nearest working day) 

• Dates for School Tours for September 2027 start TBC and will be held during October and November 2026.

Our School Tours take you on a guided tour around our facilities, which include meeting our Headteacher, and learning about our curriculum and innovative programs. On our school tours you get a first hand look at our classrooms, library, courtyard, playgrounds, forest school area and more. Oversubscription Criteria for our school

Children who have an Education Health and Care Plan (EHCP) that names the school will be admitted. NB. Those children with an EHCP that does not name the school will be referred to the Statutory Assessment Team (SAT) to determine an appropriate place.

1. Children in Care (CIC) and Children who were previously in care (CIC) but ceased to be so by reason of adoption, a residence order (now known as a child arrangement order) or special guardianship order and Children who appear to have been in state care outside of England and ceases to be in state care as a result of being adopted.

2. Children living in the catchment area with a sibling at the school (or partner infant/junior school) at the time of admission;

3. Children living in the catchment area;

4. Children living outside the catchment area who have a sibling at the school (or partner infant/junior school) at the time of admission;

5. Children of members of staff, providing that they have been employed for a minimum of two years and / or are recruited to fill a vacant post for which there is a demonstrable skills shortage.

6. Children who live outside the catchment area, but nearest the school as measured by a straight line.

In cases of equal merit in each set of criteria, priority will go to children living nearest the school as measured by a straight line.

 

In-Year Applications

For various reasons, traditionally schools in Cambridge experience some degree of movement, which means that from time to time, places become available within different year groups at different points in the school year.

Assuming that a place is available, we welcome children and families joining us at any point between Reception and Year 6.

We make a point of letting parents/carers know if spaces are available for children through our school newsletter, "The Weekly Navigator" which comes out on a Thursday. Transferring to Secondary School

The partner secondary school for Milton Road Primary is Chesterton Community College.

Early in the autumn term, parents of pupils in Year 6 receive detailed information about all secondary schools together with a preference form. About this time, secondary schools arrange open evenings. Parents are notified of their child’s secondary place towards the end of the spring term.
