Admissions

Reception Tours (for September 2024 start)

We are excited to be able to welcome prospective parents to join the Headteacher, Mrs Rae Snape, for a tour of our school. This will be an opportunity for you to experience a snapshot of Milton Road Primary School life. You will see the children learning in their classrooms and hear about Reception class routines.  Tours will be held on the following dates:

  • Thursday 2nd November – 10.00am
  • Thursday 9th November – 1.30pm
  • Thursday 16th November – 10.00am
  • Tuesday 21st November – 1.30pm
  • Thursday 30th November – 10.00am
  • Tuesday 5th December – 1.30pm

If you would like to join us on any of the above tours, please phone the School Office on 01223 712333 to book your place. These tours are designed for an adult audience and will last approximately 45 minutes, so we encourage parents to avoid bringing children with them as the tour of the school will involve listening to the Headteacher, with the opportunity to ask questions. Should you decide to apply our School, there will be further opportunities for your child to visit at a later date.

As a local authority community school, the admissions to Milton Road Primary are managed by the Local Authority. You can find out more about our school's admissions and appeal arrangements by clicking on the following LINK.

Milton Road Primary School is an inclusive community primary school with pupils aged between four and eleven years old. We welcome children from within the catchment area and beyond subject to the availability of spaces. We are a two form-entry primary school which means that we have two classes in each year group with 30 children in each class, 60 in each year group and a total number of 420 pupils.

It is county policy to admit all children to school in September of the school year in which they will be five and by law, all children must start school at the beginning of the term of their fifth birthday. As a school we seek to make the transition into the school setting as smooth as possible and we work with nurseries, child minders and families to achieve this.

The Parents’ School Preference Adviser has made a You Tube video summary available on the County Council website which covers the main points parents need to be aware of when making an application for a Reception place.  This supplements the information on the Admissions Team page about applying for a primary school place.

Cambridgeshire Local Authority (LA) is responsible for setting the admission arrangements and the Published Admission Number (PAN) of pupils. This number is currently set at 60 for our Reception class year group. Parents are advised to contact the local authority to find out additional information about the admission arrangements for the school.  The admissions form to apply for a place in Reception or a mid-year application can be found at the bottom of this page.

Applications for Foundation Stage places in September should be made by late December of the previous year/early January of the same year. Full details of how to apply are available each autumn term.

Any queries from parents should be addressed to the local authority:

Class organisation - class mixing

At the end of every academic year the teaching faculty review provision and a decision is made as to how classes need to be organised to meet the teaching and learning needs of pupils.

Class mixing takes place every year and children and parents/carers find out about their new class and teacher on "Jump Up" day (transition day) in July. Every effort is made to ensure that children are with at least one or more friend in their new class. For more information on class mixing, and why the school takes this approach every year, please take a look at the Class Mixing FAQ

Transferring to Secondary School

The partner secondary school for Milton Road Primary is Chesterton Community College. Early in the autumn term, parents of pupils in Year 6 receive detailed information about all secondary schools together with a preference form. About this time, secondary schools arrange open evenings. Parents are notified of their child’s secondary place towards the end of the spring term.
