MRPS Drama Club
Drama Club – The Milton Road Players
The club is run as a theatrical experience with a chance to get involved in all aspects of a show from auditioning and acting; to being in a chorus; to stage management and lighting. It is open to years 4, 5 and 6. We also sometimes work with a band to be able to use live music in our shows. Drama club puts on a large scale musical show in the Spring Term and a Talent Show in the Summer Term. Our sessions run on a Thursday lunchtime (singing rehearsal) and a Friday after school from 3:20pm-4:30pm in the school hall (main acting rehearsal). All members need to be available to attend both sessions.
At the start of the year, the details of the new show are revealed and pupils are invited audition for a part. Parts are allocated according to auditions, so all year groups have an equal chance. Unfortunately cast parts are limited and if your child is unsuccessful in gaining a role, they will be unable to continue in the club for that show. They can rejoin drama club for the talent show in the Summer, either as an act or as part of the chorus or dance group.
Children gain enormously from drama and we try to make the experience a fun one. Those who have joined in the past have certainly enjoyed themselves and returned for more each year. Our former members have then gone on to do more drama at secondary schools and in local theatres, having been bitten by the drama bug! A small number are invited to return to Milton Road each year to help run the drama club rehearsals.
Once the show is cast, a rehearsal schedule is published. As members are only required to attend the rehearsals for their scenes, pupils are then responsible for ensuring they are at rehearsals if their scene is on that day. If a cast member misses two rehearsals without a good explanation, they will be asked to leave the show and their part will be recast. This is a club which therefore requires a certain level of commitment from cast members and their families.
To help fund the licences required for the West End shows we do, we have to charge for tickets for our shows. Our cast also run cake sales and show t-shirts are also available to buy to help meet our production costs.
Our previous shows have included Schools will Rock You (a special schools version of the West End smash hit by Queen); Wild Wild West and Peter Pan. The 2014-15 production will be A Midsummer Night’s Dream.
