Welcome!

On behalf of all of the staff and governors welcome to Milton Road Primary School.

The children at Milton Road take great pride in their school and are excited by learning. We are very fortunate to have a fabulous new building with well equipped classrooms which our excellent teachers and skilled support staff utilise so well. The atmosphere at the school is always pleasant and purposeful and visitors often say how special it feels.

Milton Road Primary is a very highly regarded school and we are extremely proud of its many achievements, which include an “Ofsted Outstanding” rating as one of the country’s best performing schools. The school has many gifted and talented children and it also has a great diversity of nationalities and cultures which enrich the experience of everyone.

The school thrives on creativity, in the breadth of the curriculum, in its music and performances, and in the wide variety of clubs and other activities that go on before and after school and during lunchtimes. Lunchtimes have become a particular feature at the school with superb, healthy food provided by ZEST (our award winning caterers) and exciting playtimes supported by play–leaders and Teaching Assistants to encourage the children to keep active and to make great use of the courtyard as well as the outside areas.

The school also benefits from having very supportive parents. There is an active PTA that organises many events throughout the year which raise lots of money to support the school in so many ways. Many parents also provide volunteer help in classes.

Once again I would like to thank all of the staff at the school for their hard work and achievements and I look forward to yet another successful and rewarding year.

This popular school is located within walking distance of the historic and cultural centre of Cambridge. The school uses a wealth of local resources to enhance children’s learning and make meaningful links with the curriculum.

In June 2006, the school moved into a brand new, state-of-the-art building which provides high quality indoor and outdoor spaces for learning, recreation and eating.

For the intake of 2008–9 only there are three Foundation Stage classes in the Foundation Stage Wing. There are fifteen classes in total with two in each year group and three in the 2008–9 Foundation Stage cohort.

Other shared spaces include a large library with extensive ICT facilities, a hall big enough to accommodate all the children and a separate Dining Room/Community Room. In April 2007 the new school building was offici-ally opened by the children’s poet Michael Rosen. To commemorate this occasion, the newly designed school library now bears the name The Michael Rosen Library.

At the centre of the school is a large, sunny courtyard which is the focus for many activities all year round and throughout the school day. Developing this courtyard into a versatile and creative space in which to learn, eat and play is our
current ambitious project.

Attractively landscaped with trees, shrubs, grass and a pond, the outside environment provides a wide variety of opportunities for play, learning and community use.

The school received its first Ofsted Inspection in June 2006 and was judged to be an outstanding school. The Milton Road Primary School Inspection Report 20–21 June 2006 is available on www.ofsted.gov.uk/reports

The School Profile provides an annual insight into achievement and summarises key activities for the previous academic year. It can be located on http://schoolprofile.parentscentre.gov.uk

In April 2007 the new school building was officially opened by the Children’s Laureate, Michael Rosen. To commemorate this occasion, the newly designed school library now bears the name The Michael Rosen Library.

Milton Road Primary School is a community school of up to 470 pupils aged between four and eleven years old. Cambridgeshire Local Authority (LA) is responsible for setting the admission arrangements and the Published Admission Number (PAN) of pupils. From September 2004, this number was set at 60 for Foundation Stage places. The school’s PAN remains at 60 but for the year 2008-9 there will be an over-admission up to 90 pupils.  All future annual intakes to the school will be 60.

Applications for Foundation Stage places in September 2009 should be made by Friday 5th December 2008. Full details of how to apply will be available in the Autumn Term 2008.

In the event of oversubscription, the following criteria will be used to determine priority for places:

• Children who are Looked After, have a statement of special educational need which names the school or for whom this is the only school that can meet their long-term medical needs.

• Children living in the catchment area with a sibling at the school at the time of admission.

• Children living in the catchment area.

• Children living outside the catchment area who have a sibling at the school at the time of admission.

• Children living outside the catchment area who have been unable to gain a place at their catchment area school because of oversubscription.

• Children who live outside the catchment area, but nearest the school as measured by a straight line.

The LA Contact Officer for Milton Road Primary School is Lindsey Peters, Admissions Officer: admissions@cambridgeshire.gov.uk or 01223 717985.

Starting School

It is county policy to admit all children to school in September of the school year in which they will be five, and, by law, all children must start school at the beginning of the term after their fifth birthday. The school aims to make the transition into the school setting as smooth as possible.

Transferring to Secondary School

The partner school for Milton Road Primary is Chesterton Community College. Early in the Autumn Term, parents of pupils in Year 6 receive detailed information about all secondary schools together with a preference form. About this time, secondary schools arrange open evenings. Parents are notified of their child’s secondary place towards the end of the Spring Term. The majority of secondary schools offer the opportunity to spend a day in their school at the end of the Summer Term in Year 6. Detailed records about each pupil are forwarded to the allocated secondary school to facilitate continuity and progression in learning.

The school day

Reception and Key Stage 1

09:00 - 12:00

13:15 - 15:15

Key Stage 2

08:55 - 12:05

13:15 - 15:20

The bell rings at 08:55 for children to line up and follow their class teacher into school. The playground is supervised from 08:40 so children should not arrive before this time. For security reasons, pod doors are locked as soon as children have been brought into school, so please make sure your child arrives in good time for the bell. Any child arriving late, for any reason, must enter through the main entrance and report for school at the reception desk.

All pupils take a 15 minute mid-morning break and Reception and Key Stage 1 also have a mid afternoon break.

Reception, Key Stage 1 and younger Key Stage 2 children should be collected promptly by parents at the end of the school day. In the interests of safety, it is important to let the class teacher know of changes to collection arrangements.

Office Hours

The School Reception Area is clearly signposted and is open from 08:30-16:00 each day.

When calling as volunteer helpers or visitors to the school, parents should report to Reception and are expected to sign the Visitors' Book and wear visitor badges when in school for more than ten minutes. Parents should remember to sign out when they leave.
