Attendance

Regular attendance and arrival at school on time is a legal requirement. Children should not miss school unless absolutely necessary. In the case of unexpected absence, parents must contact the school before 10.00 on the first morning of absence. A note or email explaining the absence should be sent in when the child returns to school. These are kept by the school as written records which may be required by the Local Authority when monitoring attendance. Where there is no response to a written reminder to provide this explanation, the absence is recorded as unauthorised.

Prior notice should be given of unavoidable medical appointments. Attendance and punctuality are carefully monitored by the Education Welfare Officer (EWO) who may contact parents over issues of attendance. The EWO is Ms H Bridgeman who can also offer advice and support to parents. She can be contacted on 01223 566756.

The Parent Support Advisor is Sue Derry who can be contacted on 07717347436.

Parents do not have any right or entitlement to expect leave to be given for holidays during term time. The school strongly discourages such holidays. They will only be authorised by the Headteacher in exceptional circumstances and where a valid reason is fully explained on a Leave of Absence form. Leave of absence will not be granted if it coincides with formal assessments and tests for pupils (SATs).

Families considering going away for an extended period for reasons connected with their work or family should discuss matters with the Headteacher at an early stage of planning. Pupil places can not be held open for more than six weeks and may be taken by others on the waiting list.

Child Protection

The welfare of a child is paramount. It may be helpful for parents to know that the law (Children Act 1989) requires all school staff to pass on information which raises concern that a child may be at risk from non-accidental injury, neglect, emotional or sexual abuse. The Headteacher will seek, in general, to discuss any concerns with the parent, and seek their consent for a referral to Social Services. This will only be done where such discussion and agreement-seeking will not place the child at risk of significant harm. Schools are encouraged to take the attitude that where there are grounds for concern they should be very cautious and seek advice from Social Services rather than risk a child’s safety. Occasionally, this duty on Headteachers means that a concern is passed on which is later shown to be unfounded. It is hoped that parents will appreciate how difficult it is for schools to carry out this delicate responsibility, and to accept that the Headteacher always acts in good faith and has to take these steps in the best interests of all children.

Health

Specific health issues can be discussed with the class teacher or Headteacher, so that the school can provide the necessary support.

Any child suffering from diarrhoea and/or sickness should be kept at home for 48 hours after the diarrhoea and sickness has stopped. This is to prevent the spread of any infection amongst other children and staff.

No medicines are allowed at school except in exceptional circumstances for which a protocol has been provided by the child’s GP or the hospital. Antibiotics should be administered by parents before and after school. Children with inhalers must keep them readily available in school, labelled with their name and class.

Head lice are a problem for the whole community, not just schools! The only way head lice can spread is by crawling from one head to another. They are not fussy about long, short, clean or dirty hair. If head lice are found, they should be treated promptly and a family check carried out. Children should not be kept away from school.

The school has two fully certified First Aiders and a further 14 members of staff, including lunchtime supervisors, who have been trained to administer first aid.

The school must be notified immediately of any changes to contact details which can be used in the case of emergency when parents need to be contacted quickly.

Regular Drop-In sessions are held by the School Nurse at the school for parents to seek advice on any health related issues. The School Nurse can be contacted on 01223 883750 or mob: 07983343773.

Insurance

Privately owned musical instruments should be insured, as the school cannot be asked to pay for repair or replacement.

Lunch

Packed lunches:

Aspens School Catering:

Children can have Aspens school meal or bring a packed lunch of their own.

Parents should encourage their children to eat a healthy packed lunch. As there are currently children in school with severe nut allergies, parents’ co-operation in not including peanut butter or packets of nuts would be appreciated. Fizzy drinks, sweets and chocolate are not permitted. Lunch boxes should be clearly labelled with the child’s name and class.

Visit www.aspens-services.co.uk for menus

(Login and Password available from the school office)

We will introduce our new menus, offering a variety of foods that we feel meet the needs of all on site.

OUR FOOD

·        We will only use local suppliers that offer the freshest, seasonal products.

·        Our menus are nutritionally balanced, meet the Government’s Nutritional & Food Standards and will change every term.

·        We do not use ingredients with artificial additives, colourings’ or preservatives if at all possible – and do not knowingly use any food containing GM (genetically modified) ingredients.

·        The new menus are designed to offer at least 2 of the recommended ‘5 a day’ fruit and vegetables.

·        We actively encourage feedback from the students and will adapt our menus accordingly.

We will be improving the choices available every day at lunch time in the next few weeks, looking at a number of new dishes and products – and identifying the pupil’s favourites and modifying our menus accordingly.

Special Days

We hope to Liaise with the teaching staff to create special days linked in to the school’s curriculum, bringing the classroom into the dining room.

We will run these alongside our own themed days – starting with ‘My Favourite Recipe’

Plus, for Reception pupils, we have ‘Healthy Eating’ loyalty cards; rewarding children for choosing and eating fruit and vegetables – with stickers and certificates.

We will publish the calendar of events and our menus via the school’s newsletter and web site and on the Aspens website.

We will consistently propose innovation aimed at improving the service and food offers and we are very much looking forward to working closely with the School, the staff and the students in order to provide a catering service that exceeds expectations.

Snacks and Water

As a healthy mid-morning snack, children may bring fruit (fresh or dried) or raw vegetables. Foundation Stage and Key Stage 1 pupils are provided - free of charge - with a portion of fruit or vegetable each day. For younger children, where parents wish to provide the mid-morning snack themselves, it is recommended that it is prepared for easy eating and stored in a small plastic container.

Children are encouraged to drink water throughout the day. Drinking water is available on tap in every classroom. It is recommended that every child brings in an individual, labelled water bottle.

Parents are asked not to send in cakes or sweets to celebrate birthdays.

News Reports

On occasion, opportunities arise for news articles about the school to appear in the media, particularly local newspapers and sometimes on local television. Full names may be published alongside photographs. Parents who do not wish their child to be photographed for any newspaper reports should notify the school office in writing.

Coming to School

We strongly encourage children and parents to travel to and from school, whenever possible, using sustainable modes of transport, such as: walking, cycling and by scooter, skateboard or rollerblades. You may enter the school site on foot, or pushing your bike, via the main gate in Ascham Road or the pedestrian gate in Gilbert Road. There are 220 cycle racks for children to store their bikes near both these entrances. The cycle racks close to the main school office are adult racks and are reserved for visitors only. For security reasons, the gate into the school grounds from the Gilbert Road entrance will be locked from 9.15–3.00. Pedestrian access to the school during the school day will be limited to the Ascham Road entrance. For everyone’s safety, the main gates in Ascham Road will be closed to all vehicles from 8.30–9.15 and from 3.00–3.45.

The following guidelines apply to parents who bring or collect their child by car:

·                At the beginning and end of the school day, please do not drive into the short section of Ascham Road approaching the school gates beyond the Gurney Way junction. Under no circumstances should you drive into the adjoining gateway to EOTAS. This site is in constant use by a number of services not connected to Milton Road Primary School.

·                We recommend that you park at a little distance from the school and walk the last stretch. You can park in Gurney Way, Ascham Road and Gilbert Road providing you avoid obstructing our neighbours’ driveways or pulling on to grass verges. Obstructing driveways is an offence. If you need to pick up or drop off your child during the school day you may park briefly in the school car park.

·                After the main gates are opened at 3.45, they will remain open until after the end of any clubs. At this time parents may use the school car park for picking up children.

             Travel Plan

Delivering and picking up your child from school each day

Years 1 to 6:  At the beginning and end of the day children will enter and leave school through their cloakroom pod. These pods are situated between the pair of classrooms in each year group. Children and adults should wait on the asphalt playground near their year group entrance.

Foundation Stage:  Arrangements for Foundation Stage children are provided separately to parents.

The year group pod entrances are colour-coded to help identify them:

Foundation Stage    lime green

Year 1              turquoise

Year 2              purple

Year 3              orange

Year 4              green

Year 5              yellow

Year 6              blue

Outside learning environment

The semi-circular areas outside each classroom are outdoor ‘classrooms’ and are an extension of the main classroom. They are clearly defined by their structure and by their surface paving.

Schoolwear

All children should wear clothing which allows them to participate safely and healthily in all school activities. Clothing should be practical, hardwearing and suitable for such activities as: PE indoors – and outside in cold and damp weather; play time in all weathers; using the outdoor learning environment; art and design; role play and drama; sitting with legs crossed on the classroom carpet for listening activities.

School clothing with the school logo in mix-and-match navy and red is recommended and can be purchased from stock or through special orders. Royal blue PE T-shirts and navy shorts are requested for PE for health and safety reasons. The range of school clothing and other school items includes: polo shirts, sweatshirts, fleeces, tracksuits, book bags, PE bags, sunhats and baseball caps.

To distinguish Year 6 pupils, black T-shirts (long or short sleeved) with school logo may be worn by this year group only.

Day Wear

• Waterproof jacket for play times.

• Tops/dresses with short or long sleeves to protect shoulders
from sun.

• Flat shoes or sandals with backs or back straps.

• Clothing which covers the midriff.

• Clothing for young children with fastenings which can be
managed independently.

PE Wear

• Royal blue PE T-shirt.

• Navy shorts.

• Additional pair of trainers for outdoor games
  (Key Stage 1 and 2).

• Named slim-line PE bag.

• Soft bands to tie back long hair.

• Key Stage 2 swimming: girls – one piece swimsuit;
    boys – trunks/shorts.

Recommended

• School polo shirt and sweatshirt for every day wear.

• Fleece.

• Tracksuit (Key Stage 1 and 2 pupils for outdoor PE).

Wellingtons and a change of shoes when wet.

• Art shirt or overall.

• Sun hats and sun cream (roll on type to be applied by child).

Unacceptable

It is unacceptable to wear clothing or accessories which are in-appropriate or unsafe in the school context, including:
offensive images or logos; hipster trousers/skirts; full length or tight skirts; very wide or overly long trousers; short tops; chains; nail varnish; temporary tattoos; boots (except Wellingtons in wet weather). If boots are worn on the way to and from school, a change of shoes should be brought for the school day.

Other Items

Children are only allowed to wear watches, ear studs and small items of religious significance. Ear studs should be left at home on PE days.

Where it is not possible to remove ear studs, parents should provide, as part of the PE kit, a reel of micropore tape which their child can use to cover ear studs. All other jewellery must be removed during PE.

Mobile phones should not be brought into school.

Some playtime equipment is provided by the school. Children may bring one toy or piece of equipment for play time use providing that it: is named; fits into the child’s school bag; is not used for trading/swapping; the child accepts that it may get lost or damaged. Basketballs may be used for throwing games, however only sponge balls may be used for kicking games on the playground. Kicking games with proper footballs are restricted to the field. Tennis balls can be used for hand batting in safe games determined by staff. For the safety and happiness of children at play, the school may prohibit play equipment which is considered unsuitable.

Communications  www.parentmail.co.uk

Parents are always welcome in school. Teachers are usually available for consultation at short notice by phone or in person. Parents can contact the school by phone, email or a note. Parents may catch the teacher in the playground, although they are requested to avoid waylaying teachers just before the start of school when classes are being collected and taken in. Messages for teachers can be left at the reception desk.

At the start of every term, each year group sends home letters outlining the curriculum for that term and giving clear guidance on what homework to expect and how parents can support their children in their learning.

Children will also be given regular news letters and other important information, which are routinely sent home by pupil post. Parents should arrange a regular check system with their child to avoid unnecessary breakdown of communication between home and school. All school generated letters are posted, on the day they are sent home, on www.parentmail.co.uk. On parents’ behalf, the school subscribes to this service. Registration is free of charge for mail to be delivered automatically to a chosen email address.

Each term an Open Afternoon is arranged to give parents an opportunity to see their children’s work and admire displays. Consultation meetings are arranged in the Autumn and Spring Terms for parents to discuss progress and achievement with the class teacher. A written annual report is sent home towards the end of the Summer Term with the opportunity for a further consultation meeting if required.

Throughout the year special events are occasionally organised to enable parents to share in their children’s achievements; understand and appreciate the learning process; gain an insight into the current education system and the way it may develop in the future.

The school very much appreciates positive feedback on any aspects of school life which parents and their children value!

Volunteer Helpers

The school greatly appreciates the invaluable additional support which can be provided by volunteer helpers. Many parents and friends of the school give their time willingly to help in all aspects of the curriculum on a regular or occasional basis.

Complaints Procedure

Pupils, staff and parents are expected to listen carefully and respectfully to each other. Where an issue arises, parents should, in the first instance, make an appointment to speak with their child’s class teacher and seek to resolve any concerns. If a parent believes that their concern has not been resolved to their satisfaction or is of a more serious or sensitive nature, an appointment should be made to see the headteacher, who will investigate and report back on the results of the in-vestigation. Where an issue is not satisfactorily resolved, parents should then take up the matter with the Chair of Governors. A copy of the school’s Complaints Procedure is available on request.
